Hot Buttered Rum (Serves 6 to 8)
Cheesecloth and Elastic Band or Kitchen Twine
2 cups packed brown sugar 500 mL
1/2 cup butter 125 mL
Pinch salt Pinch
1/2 tsp ground nutmeg 2 mL
6 cups hot water 1.5 L
3 or 4 whole cloves 3 or 4
3 Cinnamon sticks 3
2 cups amber or dark rum 500 mL
1. In slow cooker, combine sugar, butter, salt and nutmeg. Pour in hot water, stirring until butter is melted and sugar dissolved.
2. Wrap cloves and cinnamon is a cheesecloth bag, secure with an elastic band and place in slow cooker.
3. Cover and cook on low for 4 to 10 hours. Add rum just before serving.
After a day on the icy slopes this drink is sure to warm everyone to their toes. Serve in mugs garnished with cinnamon sticks.
Amber or dark rum is the best choice for this winter warmer; white rum tends to give it a metallic flavor.
